The streaks of colour on the mound are due to the growth of thermophilic bacteria in the hot water. Above the ground the water begins to cool and evaporate. The geyser grows as the water flows over it, depositing calcium carbonate, or travertine. Orange Spring Mound, Yellowstone NP.
