Holodiscus discolor

Ocean Spray

Schaumspiere

The alternative names for ocean spray - arrow-wood and ironwood - give us a hint of its former uses. The wood is exceptionally hard and strong and was invaluable to First Nation people. They used it for arrows, harpoons and as sharp pins to anchor teepees. It was also used to make spits for roasting salmon. Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, BC. Canada
