Sitta canadensis

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Kappenkleiber

The nuthatch sits on its eggs in tree caves. It owes its name to the peculiar practice of gluing the cave entrance shut so that no robber can steel its brood. It covers the whole cave entrance with clay and only leaves a little hole just big enough for itself. Cumberland, Vancouver Island, BC. Canada
