Ursus arctos

Grizzly/Brown Bear

Braunbär

Grizzlies are bigger than black bears. Mostly nocturnal, this large shaggy grizzly has a low clumsy walk and swings his head back and forth. However, when necessary the Grizzly can run as fast as any horse. It lives in semi-open country, usually in mountainous areas. Grizzlies have three distinguishing characteristics. First, they have a shoulder hump above the shoulders. Second, they have a concave or dis-faced profile, distinguished from the straight face of black bears. Third, they have long carved claws on their front feet. These claws can reach a full 4 inches in length and make it impossible for an adult Grizzly to climb a tree as black bears can.
